Katie is new to the podcast and coming to you all the way from the U.K. to talk about her upcoming trip to Tokyo with her husband Adam and brother-in-law Ryan. This trip was initially planned to attend the big Star Wars Celebration expo that was scheduled to be in Japan in 2025, but of course it’s hard to think about traveling that far and not stopping by Toyko Disneyland, Tokyo Disney Sea, and Universal Studios Japan! With so much to see and do in Japan, outside of their park and expo time they are prioritizing time in Kyoto, trying as much of the fresh Japanese cuisine as they can lay their hands on, and visiting at least one shrine.

  • Trip Dates: April 16-27, 2025

  • Pre-Trip Interview: recorded 3/30/25

00:00:12.312 --> 00:00:16.032
VIRGINIA: Welcome to Where I Long To Be A Magical Trip Report Podcast.

00:00:16.032 --> 00:00:18.692
VIRGINIA: My name is Virginia, and I am your host.

00:00:18.692 --> 00:00:22.392
VIRGINIA: Happy belated Mother's Day to all the moms out there.

00:00:22.392 --> 00:00:25.712
VIRGINIA: I hope you all had a wonderful day yesterday.

00:00:25.712 --> 00:00:34.072
VIRGINIA: On today's episode, I am welcoming Katie, who is the third person I have had the pleasure of interviewing who was doing a trip to Tokyo.

00:00:34.072 --> 00:00:43.052
VIRGINIA: If you're looking for additional Tokyo content, I have linked in the show notes the previous episodes with my friends Jeanette and Kristina, who both did Tokyo trips as well.

00:00:43.052 --> 00:00:45.212
VIRGINIA: So let's get right into it.

00:00:45.212 --> 00:00:46.792
VIRGINIA: Here's Katie.

00:00:47.812 --> 00:00:50.312
VIRGINIA: Welcome to the podcast, Katie.

00:00:50.312 --> 00:00:50.692
KATIE: Hi.

00:00:50.692 --> 00:00:52.852
KATIE: Thank you for having me today, Virginia.

00:00:52.852 --> 00:00:54.312
VIRGINIA: Thank you for being here.

00:00:54.312 --> 00:00:57.032
VIRGINIA: Where are we talking to you from?

00:00:57.592 --> 00:01:02.432
KATIE: I live in London with my husband and I'm at home.

00:01:04.072 --> 00:01:05.872
KATIE: A bit far from you.

00:01:06.032 --> 00:01:06.792
VIRGINIA: A bit.

00:01:06.792 --> 00:01:09.772
VIRGINIA: I went to London for the very first time in August.

00:01:10.332 --> 00:01:11.312
VIRGINIA: Oh, fantastic.

00:01:11.312 --> 00:01:12.192
VIRGINIA: We loved it.

00:01:12.192 --> 00:01:13.192
VIRGINIA: We absolutely loved it.

00:01:13.192 --> 00:01:18.192
VIRGINIA: We stayed over in Chelsea by the wharf.

00:01:18.432 --> 00:01:19.252
KATIE: It's really pretty.

00:01:19.852 --> 00:01:25.932
KATIE: If you ever decide to come back, they do in Maytime, they do Chelsea Flower and Garden Show.

00:01:26.352 --> 00:01:31.112
KATIE: They have a lot of flower displays outside in the streets.

00:01:31.112 --> 00:01:34.992
KATIE: They did Lady and the Trump characters cut out of the bushes.

00:01:34.992 --> 00:01:36.252
KATIE: It was fantastic.

00:01:36.252 --> 00:01:40.112
KATIE: People just go and come and have a look because it's just the way they do.

00:01:40.112 --> 00:01:41.132
KATIE: It's just great.

00:01:41.132 --> 00:01:45.712
KATIE: If you do decide to come back, I would recommend around that time because then you can get that as well.

00:01:45.712 --> 00:01:47.552
KATIE: So it's just really pretty.

00:01:47.552 --> 00:01:49.532
KATIE: People come from all around the world just to see it.

00:01:49.532 --> 00:01:51.972
KATIE: So yeah, it's really great there.

00:01:51.972 --> 00:01:56.312
VIRGINIA: Well, my son Alex has been asking to go back since we returned.

00:01:56.312 --> 00:02:00.332
VIRGINIA: He was like, I just felt like we lived there before we left.

00:02:00.332 --> 00:02:02.472
KATIE: He lives here his previous life, isn't it?

00:02:02.472 --> 00:02:04.432
KATIE: Sometimes you just know that's the place for you.

00:02:04.432 --> 00:02:05.052
KATIE: Absolutely.

00:02:05.112 --> 00:02:06.252
KATIE: That's exactly how I feel.

00:02:06.352 --> 00:02:09.112
KATIE: Just that place you go, you just feel like it's meant to be for you.

00:02:09.112 --> 00:02:11.132
KATIE: So yeah, I know what he means.

00:02:11.132 --> 00:02:12.772
KATIE: I know what he means.

00:02:14.112 --> 00:02:14.692
VIRGINIA: All right.

00:02:14.692 --> 00:02:18.592
VIRGINIA: Well, let's hear a little bit about you and your background.

00:02:18.592 --> 00:02:21.092
VIRGINIA: So how did you come to love Disney?

00:02:21.092 --> 00:02:30.832
VIRGINIA: You're on Instagram and I noticed that you are big into posting there and definitely have a love for Disney and lots of different types of IP.

00:02:30.832 --> 00:02:38.572
VIRGINIA: We were talking right before we got on about all of the different posters behind you that you and your husband are both into these kinds of things.

00:02:38.572 --> 00:02:41.632
VIRGINIA: So tell me a little bit about how that came to be.

00:02:41.632 --> 00:02:47.492
KATIE: I mean, let me tell you a little bit about myself so you understand where I come from, who I am.

00:02:47.492 --> 00:02:53.412
KATIE: So I was born in Latvia and I moved to London when I was 18.

00:02:53.412 --> 00:02:58.012
KATIE: So I've been living in UK for now over 20 years.

00:02:58.012 --> 00:03:02.252
KATIE: And Disney has been part of my life since I was a child watching cartoons at home.

00:03:02.392 --> 00:03:06.912
KATIE: I was very good at drawing, so I used to draw a little Ariel, like Beauty and the Beast.

00:03:06.912 --> 00:03:13.512
KATIE: And I was always into that, you know, Disney was just something that I could not think of not having on my weekends.

00:03:13.512 --> 00:03:16.112
KATIE: You wake up, it was on the TV and that there was it.

00:03:16.112 --> 00:03:17.972
KATIE: And then there was the VHS tapes.

00:03:17.972 --> 00:03:21.032
KATIE: Some people wouldn't know what VHS tape is nowadays.

00:03:21.032 --> 00:03:22.032
KATIE: I still do.

00:03:22.032 --> 00:03:24.732
KATIE: So I think some people that would appreciate that.

00:03:24.732 --> 00:03:27.332
KATIE: And yes, I used to love it as a kid.

00:03:27.332 --> 00:03:33.232
KATIE: And as I grew up, we kind of was pushed in the background, you know, because a lot of things take over in life.

00:03:33.232 --> 00:03:35.312
KATIE: And then I moved to London.

00:03:35.312 --> 00:03:39.072
KATIE: And I think London is a great place to express yourself.

00:03:39.072 --> 00:03:42.532
KATIE: There's so many opportunities for people, for different fandoms.

00:03:42.532 --> 00:03:50.712
KATIE: And it is actually welcomed, you know, people understand if you like something and they like, they let you be yourself.

00:03:50.712 --> 00:04:00.192
KATIE: And I think that kind of got me back into showing people that I love Disney, actually, not hiding it, just be myself and expressing it.

00:04:00.192 --> 00:04:07.692
KATIE: And what made it even better for me, meeting my husband was just something that opened me to so many different things.

00:04:07.692 --> 00:04:11.232
KATIE: He was a huge Star Wars fan and he got me into Star Wars.

00:04:11.232 --> 00:04:12.552
KATIE: I got him into Disney.

00:04:12.552 --> 00:04:17.552
KATIE: And now we just travel the world, go to Disney parks.

00:04:17.552 --> 00:04:19.612
KATIE: We collect a lot of stuff in the house.

00:04:19.612 --> 00:04:22.032
KATIE: People say we have a Star Wars and Disney museum.

00:04:22.212 --> 00:04:26.052
KATIE: So if you're ever in London, you're more than welcome to visit our museum.

00:04:26.052 --> 00:04:28.472
KATIE: We have a lot of stuff we've collected over the years.

00:04:28.472 --> 00:04:31.152
KATIE: It's not like a one week thing.

00:04:31.152 --> 00:04:32.052
KATIE: So we have a lot of things.

00:04:32.052 --> 00:04:39.312
KATIE: And it's just for us, I think it makes me feel myself.

00:04:39.312 --> 00:04:40.192
KATIE: I'm happy.

00:04:40.192 --> 00:04:49.152
KATIE: I'm content whether I'm watching films at home, whether I'm buying new things to add to our house collection, or whether we're Disney parks.

00:04:49.272 --> 00:05:00.252
KATIE: I just think it's such a magical thing to be part of any fan, like whether it's a Star Wars fan, a Marvel fan, because fans is what makes everything better.

00:05:00.252 --> 00:05:07.592
KATIE: And I think being a fan of it, and being proud of who you are, I think makes you what you are today, you know?

00:05:07.592 --> 00:05:14.712
KATIE: And I think being able to express, like I said, London, I think being here, it just makes it so much better to be able to do.

00:05:14.712 --> 00:05:19.372
KATIE: There's so many opportunities to different shops, different shows, different exhibitions you have.

00:05:19.372 --> 00:05:27.132
KATIE: You know, you can buy the thrift shops, there's vintage shops, you can buy like vintage collectibles, clothes, et cetera.

00:05:27.132 --> 00:05:32.532
KATIE: So I think it's making my life a little bit brighter because there's so many things going on in the world.

00:05:32.532 --> 00:05:39.892
KATIE: And going back to what Walt Disney started when he opened the original Disneyland Park.

00:05:39.892 --> 00:05:47.452
KATIE: And just to give you a little bit of information, I refused to go to any Disney Park until I visited California First.

00:05:47.452 --> 00:05:59.572
KATIE: This was my first park we've ever visited because Walt Disney himself was there and he would live to see just because he didn't live, unfortunately, to see where when they opened the Florida Park.

00:05:59.572 --> 00:06:02.792
KATIE: So I think for me that's that was that special moment.

00:06:02.792 --> 00:06:11.072
KATIE: So yeah, so yeah, I think loving Disney and being a Disney fan these days is such a different experience.

00:06:11.072 --> 00:06:15.472
KATIE: There's so, so many things you can do without even going to the parks.

00:06:15.472 --> 00:06:23.932
KATIE: You know, you have got films, TV series, clothes, merchandise, there's so much out there and it's just great.

00:06:23.932 --> 00:06:29.452
KATIE: I just think being part of that, it's just what, I just love being part of it.

00:06:29.452 --> 00:06:35.672
KATIE: No matter what scale I am, like I post stories, I post my posts on my Instagram.

00:06:35.672 --> 00:06:39.912
KATIE: It's not because I want to get something out, it's just because I love it so much.

00:06:39.912 --> 00:06:54.972
KATIE: I buy clothes, I buy merchandise, I buy things, I just want to share that with people because sometimes people don't know things are out there and it's nice to share that with other people so they can say, oh, I didn't know that was there, I'm going to go buy that for myself, you know?

00:06:54.972 --> 00:07:01.712
KATIE: And that's what I find from other people's Instagram, et cetera, you know, it's just sharing that experience, sharing that information.

00:07:01.712 --> 00:07:03.932
KATIE: We have to be kind to one another.

00:07:03.932 --> 00:07:09.872
KATIE: I think, you know what, let's share the love for Disney or Star Wars or whatever people like together because we don't judge.

00:07:10.032 --> 00:07:11.972
KATIE: That's what I like about the community of people.

00:07:12.132 --> 00:07:13.912
KATIE: There's no judgment, you know.

00:07:13.912 --> 00:07:19.332
KATIE: People embrace it and they understand one another and it's all love in the air, you know.

00:07:19.332 --> 00:07:24.072
KATIE: So, yeah, I think that's kind of like why I love it, you know?

00:07:24.072 --> 00:07:24.912
VIRGINIA: Yeah.

00:07:24.912 --> 00:07:25.792
VIRGINIA: I love that.

00:07:25.792 --> 00:07:30.272
VIRGINIA: How often do you find yourself in a Disney Park?

00:07:30.272 --> 00:07:30.732
KATIE: Depends.

00:07:30.732 --> 00:07:32.332
KATIE: So we do.

00:07:32.332 --> 00:07:38.992
KATIE: So because where we live, we're actually not too far from Disneyland Paris, so it's a very easy 45-minute flight for us.

00:07:39.132 --> 00:07:45.852
KATIE: So one year, we ended up going to Disneyland Paris three times in a year because we could just jump on the plane.

00:07:45.852 --> 00:07:51.632
KATIE: But one time we literally just did it for a day, and it was like go there and back because it was quite convenient and easy.

00:07:51.632 --> 00:07:56.552
KATIE: So we're trying to at least once a year or twice a year.

00:07:56.552 --> 00:08:05.152
KATIE: And every two years, we go to California because we have got, like I say, we love that park because it's the original park.

00:08:05.152 --> 00:08:06.552
KATIE: We went there for our honeymoon.

00:08:06.652 --> 00:08:09.832
KATIE: So it's another special reason for us.

00:08:09.832 --> 00:08:15.172
KATIE: But also we now have made friends at Disney that we go and meet in California.

00:08:15.172 --> 00:08:19.912
KATIE: So there's so many people that were brought in our lives because of it.

00:08:19.912 --> 00:08:21.552
KATIE: So I think it's great.

00:08:21.552 --> 00:08:24.432
KATIE: We visited Florida last year, first time.

00:08:24.432 --> 00:08:28.192
KATIE: So we tend to do it once or twice a year, at least we try.

00:08:28.192 --> 00:08:34.492
KATIE: But then like a long haul, California or Florida, it's every couple of years because it's a bigger holiday in terms of the cost.

00:08:34.992 --> 00:08:39.972
KATIE: But Paris, at least once a year, twice a year, because it's a bit more convenient for us.

00:08:39.972 --> 00:08:40.912
VIRGINIA: Sure.

00:08:40.912 --> 00:08:41.612
VIRGINIA: Okay.

00:08:41.612 --> 00:08:45.752
VIRGINIA: And why don't you tell the listeners where you're going for this trip we're going to talk about today?

00:08:45.752 --> 00:08:55.312
KATIE: Well, wouldn't you like to know that this year we are taking off park number four, which is going to be Tokyo Disney and Tokyo Disney Sea.

00:08:55.312 --> 00:08:56.872
KATIE: I am over the moon.

00:08:56.872 --> 00:08:58.252
KATIE: I cannot wait.

00:08:58.252 --> 00:09:00.192
KATIE: Absolutely excited.

00:09:00.252 --> 00:09:00.592
VIRGINIA: Yes.

00:09:00.592 --> 00:09:01.232
VIRGINIA: Yeah.

00:09:01.232 --> 00:09:04.312
VIRGINIA: How did you choose these particular dates?

00:09:04.312 --> 00:09:16.992
KATIE: So the reason we are doing the April dates, because obviously we're traveling just before the Easter weekend, is because we are going to the Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo.

00:09:16.992 --> 00:09:19.812
KATIE: And that was the main reason we booked this trip.

00:09:19.812 --> 00:09:23.932
KATIE: We have attended the Star Wars Celebration here in London two years ago.

00:09:23.932 --> 00:09:27.312
KATIE: And they have announced Tokyo in two years, which was two years ago.

00:09:27.372 --> 00:09:36.192
KATIE: And I was like, wouldn't that be a dream to go to Japan, do Star Wars Celebration, like explore a new country, a new place?

00:09:36.192 --> 00:09:38.592
KATIE: And we were like, no, it's probably going to be too expensive.

00:09:38.592 --> 00:09:43.232
KATIE: You know, it's like something you talk about, you dream about, you think it's never going to happen.

00:09:43.232 --> 00:09:49.472
KATIE: And then when they have announced the tickets for Star Wars Celebration last year, we haven't priced the trip up.

00:09:49.472 --> 00:09:50.632
KATIE: The tickets were affordable.

00:09:50.632 --> 00:09:54.072
KATIE: We're like, you know what, let's buy the tickets and then work from there.

00:09:54.092 --> 00:09:54.892
KATIE: And that's where it was.

00:09:54.992 --> 00:10:04.132
KATIE: So yeah, so the Star Wars Celebration, because they're doing it the 18th and 19th and the 20th of April, which is that weekend around Easter.

00:10:04.132 --> 00:10:09.332
KATIE: So we've booked the ticket first and we have planned the rest of our trip around that.

00:10:09.332 --> 00:10:11.072
KATIE: And it was very great.

00:10:11.072 --> 00:10:16.952
KATIE: I was very great to remember when we booked the tickets, that is the Sakura season as well.

00:10:16.952 --> 00:10:19.792
KATIE: So we're going to capture that as well, the Blossom season.

00:10:19.792 --> 00:10:20.272
KATIE: Oh, wonderful.

00:10:20.272 --> 00:10:22.572
KATIE: It just all worked out very well.

00:10:22.632 --> 00:10:23.572
VIRGINIA: Yeah.

00:10:23.572 --> 00:10:41.072
VIRGINIA: Other people that I've spoken with who have been to Tokyo coming from the US., they have made it sound like that the parks and the experience of being in Tokyo is fairly affordable that it was the flight that's the most expensive part.

00:10:41.072 --> 00:10:41.552
VIRGINIA: Is that true?

00:10:41.552 --> 00:10:42.392
KATIE: Yeah, same for us.

00:10:43.032 --> 00:10:43.772
KATIE: Same for us.

00:10:43.772 --> 00:10:43.952
KATIE: Yeah.

00:10:43.952 --> 00:10:57.012
KATIE: So I think the whole trip when we were pricing it up compared to the US tickets, even compared to the Disneyland Paris tickets like the for the parks for the day, it is definitely price wise much cheaper.

00:10:57.012 --> 00:11:01.672
KATIE: However, the only thing I found a little bit trickier with Tokyo parks.

00:11:01.672 --> 00:11:09.312
KATIE: So when we have done California before, and we've done Florida and same as with Paris, you can buy a ticket for multiple days.

00:11:09.332 --> 00:11:13.832
KATIE: With Japan, you can only buy one park one day at a time.

00:11:13.832 --> 00:11:18.952
KATIE: You can not buy two day ticket or three day ticket, which is what I found, because we're only doing it for a few days.

00:11:18.952 --> 00:11:20.672
KATIE: So I thought it would be easier to buy it.

00:11:20.672 --> 00:11:25.512
KATIE: But yeah, for us, the same is, like you said, from the US and from London is the same.

00:11:25.512 --> 00:11:27.672
KATIE: The flight is what cost the most.

00:11:27.672 --> 00:11:33.532
KATIE: But in all fairness, for us, we've we've we compared it to when we go to US.

00:11:33.732 --> 00:11:37.152
KATIE: It was roughly like quite similar price because of the length.

00:11:37.152 --> 00:11:43.352
KATIE: It's 11 hours for us to Los Angeles, and it's a 14 hour flight to Tokyo.

00:11:43.352 --> 00:11:45.852
KATIE: So in terms of the price, it was probably about the same.

00:11:45.952 --> 00:11:50.032
KATIE: But that was the most expensive thing we had to pay for.

00:11:50.032 --> 00:11:50.792
VIRGINIA: Okay.

00:11:50.792 --> 00:11:55.772
VIRGINIA: So Wednesday, April 16th is your departure day.

00:11:55.772 --> 00:11:58.012
VIRGINIA: Or I guess, are you arriving on that day too?

00:11:58.012 --> 00:12:01.172
VIRGINIA: You're departing London and are you arriving?

00:12:01.172 --> 00:12:04.512
VIRGINIA: How does the time zone work with this?

00:12:04.512 --> 00:12:08.652
KATIE: So they are ahead of us, I think seven or six hours.

00:12:08.652 --> 00:12:14.792
KATIE: So we are departing from London, one o'clock on lunch lunchtime on a Wednesday.

00:12:15.412 --> 00:12:23.652
KATIE: And we are arriving in Tokyo local time on a Thursday, 10 o'clock in the morning, because they are ahead of us.

00:12:23.652 --> 00:12:27.672
KATIE: So yes, it will be the following day, we're landing.

00:12:27.672 --> 00:12:28.252
VIRGINIA: Okay.

00:12:28.252 --> 00:12:30.012
VIRGINIA: What airline are you going to be flying?

00:12:30.012 --> 00:12:32.432
KATIE: We are flying with British Airways.

00:12:32.432 --> 00:12:33.132
VIRGINIA: Okay.

00:12:33.132 --> 00:12:40.052
VIRGINIA: Are you going to be staying in one hotel the entire time or are you doing some switcheroo?

00:12:41.232 --> 00:12:47.472
KATIE: So we did originally think about doing like travel between the cities.

00:12:47.472 --> 00:12:50.872
KATIE: We do love shopping and bringing love luggage with us along.

00:12:50.872 --> 00:12:53.592
KATIE: It's just a bit of a nightmare, traveling between cities.

00:12:53.592 --> 00:13:00.872
KATIE: So we have decided to, so what we're doing, we are landing in Tokyo on Thursday, the 17th of April.

00:13:00.872 --> 00:13:03.812
KATIE: We're spending eight nights in Tokyo.

00:13:03.812 --> 00:13:08.672
KATIE: So we're going to travel from Tokyo by bullet train to all the destinations.

00:13:08.732 --> 00:13:12.152
KATIE: We want to go to like a day trips, any excursions, et cetera.

00:13:12.152 --> 00:13:17.952
KATIE: And then we're checking out of Tokyo after like eight nights.

00:13:17.952 --> 00:13:21.392
KATIE: And we are going to travel to Disney and we're staying there for two nights.

00:13:21.392 --> 00:13:23.572
KATIE: So we only switching once.

00:13:23.572 --> 00:13:28.872
KATIE: We just, it's much easier than the last leg of our journeys to Disney.

00:13:28.892 --> 00:13:29.732
KATIE: We're just going to stay there.

00:13:29.732 --> 00:13:34.172
KATIE: And then from there, we're going to travel back to the airport and head home.

00:13:34.172 --> 00:13:35.452
VIRGINIA: Okay.

00:13:35.452 --> 00:13:39.272
VIRGINIA: What hotel did you select for your Tokyo nights?

00:13:39.272 --> 00:13:44.292
KATIE: So in Tokyo, we are, it's called Fresa.

00:13:44.292 --> 00:13:45.152
KATIE: Let me have a look.

00:13:45.152 --> 00:13:47.152
KATIE: I have that with me on here.

00:13:47.152 --> 00:13:55.012
KATIE: Because we, so we book our Tokyo trip through the travel agent.

00:13:55.012 --> 00:14:03.672
KATIE: She always books our like US trips, et cetera, because we find it easier because of the experience that people have had in those places.

00:14:03.672 --> 00:14:06.032
KATIE: They would recommend, you know, the customer she would have had.

00:14:06.032 --> 00:14:13.012
KATIE: So they know best the area because I don't want to travel and stay in like unsafe neighborhood, et cetera, because I wouldn't know.

00:14:13.012 --> 00:14:15.092
KATIE: So she would recommend us a nice hotel.

00:14:15.092 --> 00:14:18.252
KATIE: So she has booked us in.

00:14:18.252 --> 00:14:21.532
KATIE: It's, I'm going to have to spell it, because I don't know if I'm going to say it correct.

00:14:21.532 --> 00:14:24.352
KATIE: So it's S for sugar, O.

00:14:24.352 --> 00:14:28.612
KATIE: And then it's T for tango, E for echo.

00:14:28.612 --> 00:14:33.152
KATIE: And then T for tango again, S for sugar.

00:14:33.152 --> 00:14:35.332
KATIE: And then U, so it's Sotetsu.

00:14:36.392 --> 00:14:40.112
KATIE: And then it's Fresa, F-R-E-S-I.

00:14:42.632 --> 00:14:46.152
KATIE: And then it's in, I-N-N in Tokyo.

00:14:46.152 --> 00:14:47.552
KATIE: So it's the Tokyo one.

00:14:47.612 --> 00:14:48.252
VIRGINIA: Yeah.

00:14:48.972 --> 00:14:50.952
KATIE: It's the location of it was perfect.

00:14:50.952 --> 00:15:01.872
KATIE: The reason we picked it because it's probably about two minute walk to the main train station in Tokyo, which is great for us for long distance.

00:15:01.872 --> 00:15:10.772
KATIE: There's a 7-Eleven shop nearby as well because they have the ATM, if we need any cash because some places are cash only in Japan.

00:15:10.772 --> 00:15:15.172
KATIE: And they also have like all the convenience stuff, you know, a little sandwich for the room or drink, etc.

00:15:15.432 --> 00:15:18.192
KATIE: So you can pick stuff up without having to go too far.

00:15:18.192 --> 00:15:21.692
KATIE: And there's also the subway station near as well.

00:15:21.692 --> 00:15:26.952
KATIE: So we have kind of like convenience, wherever we want to go, it's quite a good location.

00:15:26.952 --> 00:15:28.952
KATIE: And price-wise, it wasn't bad as well.

00:15:28.952 --> 00:15:30.712
KATIE: So it worked out quite well for us.

00:15:30.712 --> 00:15:32.212
KATIE: So yeah, because we had it.

00:15:32.212 --> 00:15:35.812
KATIE: She normally would give us like two, three hotels to pick from.

00:15:35.852 --> 00:15:39.112
KATIE: We can have a look on online, on the reviews, pictures, etc.

00:15:39.112 --> 00:15:42.392
KATIE: But yeah, this seemed like one of the best ones.

00:15:42.452 --> 00:15:43.932
VIRGINIA: Okay, fantastic.

00:15:43.932 --> 00:15:45.672
VIRGINIA: I will make sure to link that in the show notes.

00:15:45.672 --> 00:15:51.412
VIRGINIA: So if anybody else is planning a trip to Tokyo, they can see where you were and maybe consider it for themselves.

00:15:51.412 --> 00:15:57.332
VIRGINIA: Let's talk through your Tokyo days and what you think your rough plans are for each day.

00:15:57.332 --> 00:15:59.552
VIRGINIA: If you don't know, it's okay.

00:15:59.552 --> 00:16:00.072
KATIE: Don't worry.

00:16:00.652 --> 00:16:02.892
KATIE: I've got it all planned.

00:16:02.892 --> 00:16:03.372
VIRGINIA: Good.

00:16:03.372 --> 00:16:03.992
KATIE: I love it.

00:16:03.992 --> 00:16:10.432
KATIE: I'm always prepared because I think, so we are traveling, me and my husband and my brother-in-law.

00:16:10.432 --> 00:16:12.772
KATIE: So my husband's brother is coming with us.

00:16:12.772 --> 00:16:13.152
VIRGINIA: Okay.

00:16:13.152 --> 00:16:14.432
VIRGINIA: What is your husband's name?

00:16:14.432 --> 00:16:20.932
KATIE: So my husband's Adam and my brother-in-law, Ryan, is coming with us as well.

00:16:20.932 --> 00:16:32.392
KATIE: So there's three of us traveling from London to oversee Tokyo and we're doing the whole trip together because he wanted to go for a very long time as well.

00:16:32.392 --> 00:16:34.412
KATIE: None of his friends seem to be very interested.

00:16:34.412 --> 00:16:39.412
KATIE: So I was like, look, if you would like to come with us, that's absolutely fine, we can take you along.

00:16:39.412 --> 00:16:44.852
KATIE: So we had to make a plan because we like the same things, but we like different things as well.

00:16:44.852 --> 00:16:48.752
KATIE: So I should put a plan so we can capture everything for everyone.

00:16:48.752 --> 00:16:57.752
KATIE: And again, I was here with the time difference, having the Disney parks at the end, having to attend the Star Wars Celebration and all the other stuff.

00:16:57.752 --> 00:17:05.512
KATIE: We just had to plan it because we had to book tickets for places and like plan the travel, book a new train tickets, etc.

00:17:05.512 --> 00:17:15.572
KATIE: So in terms of the plan, we have obviously, we're landing on the 17th in Tokyo, and then we're going to travel from the airport to the hotel.

00:17:15.572 --> 00:17:24.212
KATIE: We've looked at this, obviously, the subway system that you can get the train from the airport to the hotel, which is quite convenient and it's not far.

00:17:24.252 --> 00:17:27.632
KATIE: We've got, we're landing at the Haneda Airport.

00:17:27.632 --> 00:17:30.272
KATIE: I hope I say it correct because there are two airports.

00:17:30.272 --> 00:17:34.832
KATIE: This is the closest one to the town, so we've chosen to travel there.

00:17:34.832 --> 00:17:45.552
KATIE: So we're going to either get the train from the airport to the hotel, or I also found a shuttle bus, which is quite cheap for like six pounds, six dollars give or take.

00:17:45.552 --> 00:17:48.532
KATIE: It's a one-way journey for per person.

00:17:48.532 --> 00:17:51.012
KATIE: So it's quite cheap if people don't want to pay for a taxi, etc.

00:17:51.712 --> 00:17:57.692
KATIE: It's quite cheap when it takes you to the Tokyo station, which as I said, a couple of minutes walk from our hotel.

00:17:57.692 --> 00:18:01.152
KATIE: So it's quite good if we choose to do that.

00:18:01.152 --> 00:18:11.152
KATIE: So then yes, so Thursday is just get there, check in, try and stay awake as long as we can, because if we fall asleep, it wipes you out for the rest of the trip.

00:18:11.152 --> 00:18:19.092
KATIE: So try and stay awake, probably go have a nice lunch, do a bit of exploring around the neighborhood just to see what's where.

00:18:19.092 --> 00:18:23.132
KATIE: And then obviously Friday, we have got tickets to the Star Wars Celebration.

00:18:23.132 --> 00:18:30.172
KATIE: So we're going to be traveling for the event and spending the day at the exhibition center.

00:18:30.172 --> 00:18:31.732
KATIE: So it's just outside the Tokyo.

00:18:31.732 --> 00:18:32.892
KATIE: So it's about 20 minutes.

00:18:32.892 --> 00:18:35.372
KATIE: It looked like on the subway.

00:18:35.392 --> 00:18:39.772
KATIE: And then that's the whole day event because that starts early in the morning until the evening.

00:18:39.772 --> 00:18:42.772
KATIE: So that's like the whole day we're going to spend there.

00:18:42.772 --> 00:18:53.052
KATIE: And because we're doing the same on a Sunday, the Saturday we have decided just to do a Tokyo exploring, just do a bit of sightseeing.

00:18:53.052 --> 00:18:56.952
KATIE: So we're not going to go far traveling out because it's going to be long two days.

00:18:56.952 --> 00:19:02.972
KATIE: So I thought if we stay in the city, we could just get on the metro, on the tube, on the subway.

00:19:03.392 --> 00:19:06.172
KATIE: I think they're calling metro, we call it tube.

00:19:06.172 --> 00:19:07.892
KATIE: I think in US it's subway.

00:19:07.892 --> 00:19:10.272
KATIE: So I always get confused which one it is, but yeah.

00:19:10.272 --> 00:19:20.192
KATIE: So we're going to get one of those and just travel between, because there's obviously a different, they have the Pokemon Center, they have Lego stores, which is what we all want to go and see.

00:19:20.192 --> 00:19:21.812
KATIE: They have got Disney store.

00:19:21.812 --> 00:19:26.372
KATIE: They have got their famous Shibuya crossing, which is where Fast and Furious films were filmed.

00:19:26.372 --> 00:19:29.212
KATIE: So there's a lot of things you can do without going too far.

00:19:29.212 --> 00:19:34.072
KATIE: So I think Saturday plan is just to stay local, do some sightseeing, exploring.

00:19:34.072 --> 00:19:40.172
KATIE: We found a lot of nice food places through Instagram, through recommendations from friends.

00:19:40.172 --> 00:19:42.872
KATIE: My cousin used to live in Japan for two years.

00:19:42.872 --> 00:19:46.392
KATIE: She did like an exchange when she was at university.

00:19:46.392 --> 00:19:48.912
KATIE: So she's recommended a couple of places as well.

00:19:48.912 --> 00:19:54.472
KATIE: So we're just going to do a bit of exploring, go back to the Star Wars Celebration on Sunday.

00:19:54.472 --> 00:19:59.712
KATIE: We were lucky enough to secure a photo up with Hayden Christensen on a Sunday.

00:19:59.852 --> 00:20:02.552
KATIE: So we're very excited to go and take pictures with him.

00:20:02.852 --> 00:20:03.752
KATIE: Super excited.

00:20:03.752 --> 00:20:05.572
KATIE: I was like, oh my god, it had to happen.

00:20:05.572 --> 00:20:07.752
KATIE: So yes, we're very excited for that.

00:20:07.752 --> 00:20:15.032
KATIE: And then Monday, we're probably going to get the bullet train and we're going to travel to Kyoto.

00:20:15.032 --> 00:20:21.932
KATIE: So Kyoto, from what we've researched, is like an old school village, like an old school town.

00:20:21.932 --> 00:20:23.252
KATIE: So it's very traditional.

00:20:23.252 --> 00:20:28.272
KATIE: Their houses are like very old, like built years and years ago.

00:20:28.412 --> 00:20:35.672
KATIE: So I can't remember exactly, but you know, it's just very traditional and very authentic.

00:20:35.672 --> 00:20:38.592
KATIE: And I thought it's nice to see, because Tokyo is very modern.

00:20:38.592 --> 00:20:42.692
KATIE: It's very, you know, technology, fast-paced, all these vending machines, et cetera.

00:20:42.692 --> 00:20:44.812
KATIE: But Kyoto has that history.

00:20:44.832 --> 00:20:49.032
KATIE: It's got a bit of, you know, that raw Japanese culture.

00:20:49.032 --> 00:20:51.252
KATIE: So I think it'd be nice to experience that.

00:20:51.252 --> 00:20:55.552
KATIE: There's a lot of places that have like shrines in there, and it gets very busy.

00:20:55.552 --> 00:20:56.952
KATIE: So you'd have to go quite early.

00:20:57.052 --> 00:21:06.052
KATIE: So we're going to have to get one of the early trains to get there before like a lot of the people like ourselves wanting to visit the place are going to be there.

00:21:06.052 --> 00:21:09.512
KATIE: And then we haven't decided yet, but we have to see how it goes in the day.

00:21:09.512 --> 00:21:14.812
KATIE: Because another place we wanted to go is Osaka, which is a smaller version of Tokyo.

00:21:14.812 --> 00:21:23.652
KATIE: They have a lot of like shops for all the models, for like gadgets, technology, et cetera.

00:21:23.652 --> 00:21:25.272
KATIE: Which is again, something that my husband likes.

00:21:25.352 --> 00:21:31.092
KATIE: He likes to collect all the little consoles, like all the handheld gadgets, et cetera.

00:21:31.452 --> 00:21:33.172
KATIE: He's into his technology and gadgets.

00:21:33.172 --> 00:21:37.172
KATIE: So I think that's something he'd like to have a look at.

00:21:37.172 --> 00:21:40.232
VIRGINIA: Are you thinking you might do that in the same day as Kyoto?

00:21:40.232 --> 00:21:49.352
KATIE: Well, we were thinking to see, because we originally wanted to do a day in each, but then we started to look what is there for us.

00:21:49.352 --> 00:21:52.072
KATIE: Because a lot of people stay there for like two, three days.

00:21:52.592 --> 00:21:56.112
KATIE: But if it's just for the food, there's food everywhere pretty much the same.

00:21:56.112 --> 00:21:58.192
KATIE: Like you can find a lot of stuff similar.

00:21:58.192 --> 00:22:06.712
KATIE: So we're going to go to Kyoto, because the main shrine that we want to visit is there, and we're going to start that in the morning.

00:22:06.712 --> 00:22:10.272
KATIE: We'll go to lunchtime, and then we'll decide whether that's enough.

00:22:10.272 --> 00:22:13.192
KATIE: And we want to head to Osaka.

00:22:13.192 --> 00:22:17.732
KATIE: And if not, we're going to stay there for the day, and then we'll go back to Osaka another day.

00:22:17.732 --> 00:22:25.392
KATIE: So we're going to probably go with that one as we go along, because we might think half a day is enough, or maybe not.

00:22:25.392 --> 00:22:31.152
KATIE: I would like to go to Osaka on the same day, because they have a cute little train that goes between.

00:22:31.152 --> 00:22:36.372
KATIE: And on there, they have a little bonsai tree, like a Japanese garden, on the train.

00:22:36.372 --> 00:22:40.332
KATIE: And it's only like two pound or three pound to travel.

00:22:40.332 --> 00:22:43.652
KATIE: And it's not a long journey, because they're not far from each other.

00:22:43.652 --> 00:22:45.432
KATIE: But it's just very scenic.

00:22:45.432 --> 00:22:47.372
KATIE: You have like nice mountains in the background.

00:22:47.372 --> 00:22:49.472
KATIE: When you sit on the chair, and you can look at it.

00:22:49.872 --> 00:22:53.272
KATIE: And they say, it's like you're in somebody's house.

00:22:53.272 --> 00:22:55.432
KATIE: You know, like in Japan, it's like very home.

00:22:55.432 --> 00:22:57.672
KATIE: And I'm like, I just want to ride the train.

00:22:57.672 --> 00:23:01.052
KATIE: Like that's probably why I want to go to Osaka the same day, because I just want to ride the train.

00:23:01.052 --> 00:23:02.252
KATIE: It's just so cute.

00:23:02.252 --> 00:23:03.652
KATIE: So yeah, there's a lot of stuff we found.

00:23:03.652 --> 00:23:08.332
KATIE: So a lot of things we're doing in Japan is, a lot of it come from Instagram.

00:23:08.332 --> 00:23:13.472
KATIE: There's a lot of people that have been, and they put their obviously reviews, recommendations, et cetera.

00:23:13.472 --> 00:23:24.052
KATIE: And I think that I found very helpful, because just doing like a trip advisor research and stuff, you're not necessarily have the pictures or true representation of what it is.

00:23:24.052 --> 00:23:27.092
KATIE: I think Instagram for that was really, really helpful.

00:23:27.092 --> 00:23:37.532
KATIE: So we found a lot of food places, the shops to go to, because the people put their itinerary when they go to Japan, that, oh, I've done this, and then you can pick what you want.

00:23:37.532 --> 00:23:38.452
KATIE: Sure.

00:23:38.452 --> 00:23:38.792
KATIE: So yes.

00:23:38.792 --> 00:23:40.492
KATIE: So we found that very helpful.

00:23:40.492 --> 00:23:46.052
KATIE: But yeah, Monday is Kyoto for sure, because I think that's something that is different and unique.

00:23:46.452 --> 00:23:55.612
KATIE: And then we will base around the day, whether we're going to go to a sack and then not go back there, or just do another day.

00:23:55.612 --> 00:24:00.752
KATIE: So we're going to get that, because it's a couple of hours on the train from Tokyo to Kyoto.

00:24:00.752 --> 00:24:03.432
KATIE: It's about two hours train on the bullet train.

00:24:03.432 --> 00:24:06.032
KATIE: If you go by car, it's about six hours ride.

00:24:06.032 --> 00:24:08.572
KATIE: But obviously the bullet train goes very quick.

00:24:08.572 --> 00:24:12.432
KATIE: It's going to take us about a couple of hours to get one way, which is not too bad.

00:24:13.432 --> 00:24:16.392
VIRGINIA: What is the name of the shrine that you're going to see in Kyoto?

00:24:16.392 --> 00:24:18.592
KATIE: So that is the...

00:24:18.592 --> 00:24:20.112
KATIE: Let me tell you which one it was.

00:24:20.112 --> 00:24:26.112
KATIE: Because it's just one of the oldest shrines.

00:24:26.112 --> 00:24:31.572
KATIE: Yeah, so it's called Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine.

00:24:31.572 --> 00:24:33.212
KATIE: So it's Fushimi Inari.

00:24:33.492 --> 00:24:39.092
KATIE: So that's the most popular, the oldest shrine they have.

00:24:39.092 --> 00:24:44.952
KATIE: And it's just looks so unique to Japan.

00:24:44.952 --> 00:24:47.292
KATIE: Whenever you look at pictures, it comes up.

00:24:47.292 --> 00:24:51.032
KATIE: You have the red ones.

00:24:51.032 --> 00:25:02.232
KATIE: And the thing is, the problem is now, the reason I said to myself, we have to visit it because they're now trying to ban tourists from a lot of shrines because they says you can't touch, you can't do this.

00:25:02.492 --> 00:25:05.732
KATIE: And people do, some people are just a bit silly.

00:25:05.732 --> 00:25:11.312
KATIE: And I'm just hoping that when we get there, we get to experience because I don't, you don't know how it's going to go.

00:25:11.312 --> 00:25:17.992
KATIE: Some places start, some destinations start to get a little bit more strict with tourists because some people just can't help themselves.

00:25:17.992 --> 00:25:21.332
KATIE: And it's just, unfortunately, then ruins it for everybody else.

00:25:21.332 --> 00:25:33.932
KATIE: But yes, I'm hoping we can go and actually see because that's the place I guess really they say, if you're there before eight, you can get to see it quite nicely without crowds, past eight o'clock, it gets too busy.

00:25:33.932 --> 00:25:39.252
KATIE: It's just so, so crazy crowded because it's such a narrow place.

00:25:39.252 --> 00:25:44.552
KATIE: And everybody's trying to squeeze in and you're like, oh, you can see apparently it's the back of people's heads.

00:25:44.552 --> 00:25:46.972
KATIE: And I was like, that's not enjoyable, is it?

00:25:46.972 --> 00:25:54.432
KATIE: So we're going to try and get there as early as we can just to make sure we can get to experience, like just to see it, you know?

00:25:54.492 --> 00:25:57.552
KATIE: So yeah, so that's the Monday plan.

00:25:57.552 --> 00:25:59.232
VIRGINIA: All right, what about Tuesday?

00:25:59.232 --> 00:26:08.092
KATIE: So Tuesday, we're going to have to travel to Osaka, but we're traveling to Osaka to go to Universal Studios because that's where it's based.

00:26:08.092 --> 00:26:11.252
KATIE: So it's not actually in Tokyo, it's in Osaka.

00:26:11.252 --> 00:26:13.512
KATIE: They have their Universal Studios.

00:26:13.512 --> 00:26:18.512
KATIE: We're very excited because in February, they have opened the Donkey Kong Land.

00:26:18.512 --> 00:26:22.312
KATIE: So they've always had Nintendo World because that's where it came from.

00:26:22.472 --> 00:26:24.252
KATIE: Because then they've opened in California.

00:26:24.252 --> 00:26:26.652
KATIE: Now obviously, they're going to Florida.

00:26:26.652 --> 00:26:30.672
KATIE: But they have opened a new land which is the Donkey Kong Land.

00:26:30.672 --> 00:26:33.492
KATIE: It is similar system to what they had in California before.

00:26:33.492 --> 00:26:37.212
KATIE: We had to book a time slot for the area, etc.

00:26:37.232 --> 00:26:43.292
KATIE: So what we've done, we have booked a ticket for the park, which is a standard park ticket.

00:26:43.292 --> 00:26:48.792
KATIE: Then we've booked the time slot areas for the rides we wanted to do because we're only going to go for one day.

00:26:48.872 --> 00:26:56.292
KATIE: We thought to get everything done because it's not a massive park, but if you end up queuing for too long, you're missing out on other experiences.

00:26:56.292 --> 00:27:05.832
KATIE: So they do the Water World Show, like they do California Universal Studios, and you obviously see the Donkey Kong, the Harry Potter, you've got obviously Jurassic.

00:27:05.832 --> 00:27:12.612
KATIE: So we want to experience everything because we have done Universal Studios before, but Ryan, my brother-in-law, he has never been.

00:27:12.612 --> 00:27:14.952
KATIE: So for him, I thought it would be a great experience.

00:27:14.992 --> 00:27:18.732
KATIE: Then if we don't have to queue too much, we can actually do what we want to do.

00:27:18.732 --> 00:27:21.092
KATIE: Try all the foods, do the shows, do the rides.

00:27:21.492 --> 00:27:22.772
KATIE: So we've booked the time slots.

00:27:22.772 --> 00:27:26.972
KATIE: So they've already allocated us times for all the areas and for the rides.

00:27:26.972 --> 00:27:28.652
KATIE: So we know when we can go.

00:27:28.652 --> 00:27:31.012
KATIE: So if we get to do it more than once, fantastic.

00:27:31.012 --> 00:27:36.532
KATIE: If the queue is not big, but at least we know we will definitely get to ride every ride once that we want to do.

00:27:36.532 --> 00:27:45.352
KATIE: So yes, we're going to do that on Tuesday because again, we're just going to get the bullet train, travel to Osaka.

00:27:45.352 --> 00:27:51.792
KATIE: You have to change for the like metros from the train station because it's not straight at the Osaka station.

00:27:51.792 --> 00:27:56.152
KATIE: So we're just going to have to get metro which is like a couple of stops which is not too bad.

00:27:56.152 --> 00:28:08.172
KATIE: And then spend the day there, experience all the rides, do the shows like I said, and then yeah, just travel back in the evening which is again, a couple of hours on the train.

00:28:08.172 --> 00:28:10.792
KATIE: You can have a little nap if you're a little bit tired.

00:28:10.832 --> 00:28:15.572
KATIE: That's absolutely fine, you know, but yeah, so that's Monday, Tuesday.

00:28:15.572 --> 00:28:24.112
KATIE: And again, depending what happens on Monday, if we decide to go to Osaka on the same day as we do Kyoto, then we're done.

00:28:24.112 --> 00:28:33.832
KATIE: So all we'll then do Tuesday, Wednesday, we will then, and Thursday, we will just like travel around Tokyo because there's a lot of different areas we want to do.

00:28:34.052 --> 00:28:35.792
KATIE: So we saw little towns and stuff.

00:28:35.792 --> 00:28:38.432
KATIE: So we will see where we want to go.

00:28:38.432 --> 00:28:43.912
KATIE: We have got a list of places we want to visit, and some of them just need to go a little bit further out.

00:28:43.912 --> 00:28:46.952
KATIE: So we will see if we need to go back to Osaka, then yes.

00:28:46.952 --> 00:28:50.472
KATIE: And if not, we're just going to do little parks.

00:28:50.472 --> 00:28:55.272
KATIE: There's an Imperial Palace next to our hotel, which is where the Tokyo Station is.

00:28:55.272 --> 00:28:57.352
KATIE: So we can maybe go and see that.

00:28:57.352 --> 00:29:03.092
KATIE: And yeah, just see what, like I said, try and do as much as we can off the list that we have.

00:29:03.492 --> 00:29:09.792
KATIE: I think I'll probably spend more, most of my time and my money in all their restaurants because I absolutely love sushi.

00:29:09.792 --> 00:29:13.412
KATIE: So that will be my absolute heaven.

00:29:13.412 --> 00:29:17.132
KATIE: And I have found all like nice ramen places, nice sushi place.

00:29:17.132 --> 00:29:20.012
KATIE: There's a sushi restaurant walking distance from our hotel.

00:29:20.012 --> 00:29:25.092
KATIE: And apparently at lunch, you can have all you can eat sushi for $13.

00:29:25.192 --> 00:29:26.172
KATIE: You'll find me there.

00:29:26.172 --> 00:29:28.012
KATIE: You'll find me there, honestly.

00:29:28.012 --> 00:29:35.152
KATIE: And the thing is because their fish is like fresh and stuff, this is the perfect place to actually enjoy anything you can try.

00:29:35.152 --> 00:29:36.872
KATIE: You try all the possible things.

00:29:36.872 --> 00:29:38.372
KATIE: So yes, I'm very excited for that.

00:29:38.372 --> 00:29:39.992
KATIE: So I think that's where my money is going to be spent.

00:29:39.992 --> 00:29:41.532
KATIE: So but it's fine.

00:29:41.532 --> 00:29:42.212
KATIE: You know what?

00:29:42.212 --> 00:29:43.372
KATIE: I don't have a problem with that.

00:29:43.372 --> 00:29:44.112
KATIE: I love food.

00:29:44.112 --> 00:29:46.172
KATIE: So yeah, that's absolutely fine.

00:29:46.172 --> 00:29:47.632
VIRGINIA: That sounds amazing.

00:29:47.632 --> 00:29:51.352
VIRGINIA: My son, Alex, has always wanted to go to Tokyo.

00:29:51.352 --> 00:29:55.532
VIRGINIA: And the only reason we went to London first was because that was first on his list.

00:29:55.532 --> 00:29:55.732
KATIE: Yeah.

00:29:55.732 --> 00:29:56.292
KATIE: OK.

00:29:56.292 --> 00:29:57.872
VIRGINIA: So we did London first.

00:29:58.072 --> 00:30:06.252
VIRGINIA: And we have told him that we will probably do Tokyo as like a high school graduation trip for him.

00:30:06.252 --> 00:30:08.092
VIRGINIA: He's just finishing up his first year of high school.

00:30:08.092 --> 00:30:09.452
VIRGINIA: So we have a few years to go.

00:30:09.452 --> 00:30:10.052
VIRGINIA: A few years.

00:30:10.052 --> 00:30:11.172
KATIE: Yeah, that's fine.

00:30:11.172 --> 00:30:13.992
VIRGINIA: He is also a big sushi person, a big ramen person.

00:30:13.992 --> 00:30:18.732
VIRGINIA: So I'm very much looking forward to hearing your report back about what was good.

00:30:18.732 --> 00:30:19.032
KATIE: Definitely.

00:30:19.032 --> 00:30:30.992
KATIE: No, that's why I mean, because I always have, like I said, I found a lot of it through the Instagram, which is quite great, because like I said, people give you their reviews, their feedback, and then you base your judgment on whether that's what you want to do.

00:30:30.992 --> 00:30:31.872
KATIE: And I think it's great.

00:30:31.872 --> 00:30:43.032
KATIE: And then, yeah, so I've made like a list of places we would like to try, because I think it's just nice to experience something different, because you can buy burgers and sandwiches, et cetera.

00:30:43.032 --> 00:30:44.212
KATIE: You can buy them anywhere.

00:30:44.212 --> 00:30:48.912
KATIE: But to go to like Tokyo, I want to try something I would probably never try anywhere else.

00:30:48.912 --> 00:30:49.572
KATIE: And you know what?

00:30:49.572 --> 00:30:54.512
KATIE: That's what it's all about, is making that experience a little bit more unique, a little bit different.

00:30:54.512 --> 00:30:56.412
KATIE: So that's why I'm very, very excited for that.

00:30:56.832 --> 00:30:59.092
KATIE: And also going to the last part of our trip.

00:30:59.092 --> 00:31:06.272
KATIE: So Friday, we will be checking out of our hotel and traveling, obviously, to Tokyo, Disney, and obviously DisneySea.

00:31:06.272 --> 00:31:08.132
VIRGINIA: Where are you staying there?

00:31:08.132 --> 00:31:12.872
KATIE: So we are staying in one of the hotels in the area.

00:31:12.872 --> 00:31:15.412
KATIE: And that one we booked just through
booking.com.

00:31:15.412 --> 00:31:25.732
KATIE: Because so when we booked the trip, the travel agent that booked the trip for us, they could not book us any Disney tickets, which normally they can do that for US.

00:31:26.412 --> 00:31:29.832
KATIE: And she could not book us any hotels in the Disney area.

00:31:29.832 --> 00:31:32.112
KATIE: All of those you have to book directly.

00:31:32.112 --> 00:31:38.692
KATIE: And so she only could book us a flight from London to Tokyo and back and the hotel in Tokyo.

00:31:38.692 --> 00:31:42.312
KATIE: So all the theme park tickets, we had to book ourselves.

00:31:42.312 --> 00:31:45.992
KATIE: Obviously we have booked our Star Wars Celebration tickets already.

00:31:45.992 --> 00:31:48.452
KATIE: And then we booked the hotel as well ourselves.

00:31:48.452 --> 00:31:51.152
KATIE: I just booked that through
booking.com because I have an account.

00:31:51.152 --> 00:31:53.672
KATIE: You get like all these discounts and stuff like that.

00:31:53.792 --> 00:32:03.372
KATIE: So we've booked our hotel and it's called Hotel Okura, O-K-U-R-A, Tokyo Bay.

00:32:03.372 --> 00:32:06.792
KATIE: It's similar to like a Marriott Hotels, you know, just a nice simple one.

00:32:06.792 --> 00:32:13.772
KATIE: We were looking at the Toy Story Hotel originally, but you have to book everything with Tokyo.

00:32:13.772 --> 00:32:16.252
KATIE: It's like two months before, you know, you have to book.

00:32:16.252 --> 00:32:20.652
KATIE: As soon as, if you're not there and you're not ready, the rooms sell out, the tickets sell out.

00:32:20.752 --> 00:32:24.232
KATIE: So you have to be like on the dot trying to book everything.

00:32:24.232 --> 00:32:29.272
KATIE: And by the time we've realized, oh my God, we haven't checked the Toy Story Hotel, booked up.

00:32:29.272 --> 00:32:30.272
KATIE: That's it.

00:32:30.272 --> 00:32:34.692
KATIE: And you can only stay in Toy Story Hotel two nights maximum.

00:32:34.692 --> 00:32:36.112
KATIE: They don't allow any longer.

00:32:36.112 --> 00:32:38.952
KATIE: So that's why it's a slightly different system to what I'm used to.

00:32:39.172 --> 00:32:43.252
KATIE: So we like, had to rack our brains around of how to do this, how to do that.

00:32:43.252 --> 00:32:53.192
KATIE: So when we were booking the Tokyo tickets, the Disney, so we booked, we were only doing one day Tokyo Disney Sea and one day Tokyo Disney.

00:32:53.192 --> 00:32:55.372
KATIE: So one park, one day.

00:32:55.372 --> 00:33:13.152
KATIE: Only because if we do one day full in each park, because I've heard from people's experience and reviews before of the Disney parks in Asia, like Tokyo, China and Hong Kong, that they are obviously Disney, but they have their own characters and their own rights.

00:33:13.152 --> 00:33:24.892
KATIE: So some people just may not necessarily find their cup of tea, if that makes sense, because it's a slightly different parks to what probably some people use, like Paris or US.

00:33:24.892 --> 00:33:32.992
KATIE: People just don't, and I'm not saying this is a bad park, but I just thought I don't want to book four days and then you stay in there.

00:33:32.992 --> 00:33:35.772
KATIE: So for the first time, all the parks, we normally did few days.

00:33:35.872 --> 00:33:39.072
KATIE: Anyway, just to kind of see what it's like.

00:33:39.072 --> 00:33:50.552
KATIE: And again, as much as I love Disney, this trip is more about Japan itself, like experiencing the culture, because it's probably like a once-in-a-lifetime kind of trip.

00:33:50.552 --> 00:33:53.512
KATIE: Well, I said that about Disneyland and I go there every year.

00:33:53.572 --> 00:33:58.412
KATIE: So, you know, let's not go, that's a completely different conversation, right?

00:33:58.412 --> 00:34:03.292
KATIE: So yeah, so we're checking into the hotel on a Friday morning.

00:34:03.292 --> 00:34:10.372
KATIE: So we're going to check out in Tokyo, travel to Disney, check in, stay in there for two nights.

00:34:10.372 --> 00:34:16.212
KATIE: And then we're checking out on a Sunday and we're going to travel back to the hotel or to the airport.

00:34:16.212 --> 00:34:20.212
KATIE: Again, there is taxi, there's metro, and you can also get the shuttle bus.

00:34:20.212 --> 00:34:23.812
KATIE: So there are a few options for people, whichever way people find easier.

00:34:23.812 --> 00:34:26.012
KATIE: Oh, you know, if you don't want to pay a lot of money.

00:34:26.012 --> 00:34:36.992
KATIE: And if you have the time, you could get like a longer options, like that the shuttle takes about an hour to travel from Disney to the airport, because they've obviously stopped at other hotels to pick other people up.

00:34:36.992 --> 00:34:41.692
KATIE: But it's six dollars, six pounds, six dollars, give or take one way for one person.

00:34:41.692 --> 00:34:43.212
KATIE: So you know what?

00:34:43.432 --> 00:34:45.052
KATIE: It's a quite good option.

00:34:45.052 --> 00:34:48.872
KATIE: And again, it's convenient to pick you up from the hotel and you drop you off at the airport.

00:34:48.872 --> 00:34:49.912
KATIE: So it's quite convenient.

00:34:49.912 --> 00:34:50.872
KATIE: So we're going to do that.

00:34:51.412 --> 00:35:05.852
KATIE: But I am also very excited for Tokyo Disney food, because apparently the price the prices are much cheaper than across like in Paris, in Europe, and they have so much variety, like it's different foods.

00:35:05.852 --> 00:35:11.612
KATIE: Like they actually when they make a ramen in the parks, their yolk is making shape.

00:35:11.612 --> 00:35:12.772
KATIE: I don't know how they do it.

00:35:12.772 --> 00:35:13.352
VIRGINIA: Oh, wow.

00:35:13.352 --> 00:35:14.192
KATIE: I have no idea.

00:35:14.192 --> 00:35:15.132
KATIE: But I've seen pictures.

00:35:15.172 --> 00:35:16.952
KATIE: And I'm like, how?

00:35:16.952 --> 00:35:20.112
KATIE: It's just that it's all like science, I guess.

00:35:20.112 --> 00:35:21.212
KATIE: It's just, yeah, I know.

00:35:21.212 --> 00:35:22.652
KATIE: But it's just it buffers me.

00:35:22.652 --> 00:35:26.552
KATIE: So I'm like, yeah, so there's a lot of again, there's a lot of food that we found in the parks.

00:35:26.572 --> 00:35:27.932
KATIE: It's quite great.

00:35:27.932 --> 00:35:29.452
KATIE: Obviously, I've got my outfits planned.

00:35:29.452 --> 00:35:31.792
KATIE: I mean, we're there for two days, but I have four outfits.

00:35:31.792 --> 00:35:33.212
KATIE: So I'm going to have to go back and get changed.

00:35:33.212 --> 00:35:35.812
VIRGINIA: So, oh, my God, it has to be it has to be done.

00:35:35.812 --> 00:35:39.732
KATIE: So because it's just different because they have got something that we wouldn't have.

00:35:40.312 --> 00:35:42.052
KATIE: I love The Little Mermaid.

00:35:42.052 --> 00:35:46.532
KATIE: This is one of the cartoons I've watched over and over when I was a kid, right?

00:35:46.532 --> 00:35:51.472
KATIE: They have the whole aerial section, which none of the parks have.

00:35:51.472 --> 00:35:53.392
KATIE: They have going Florida, but it's not as big.

00:35:53.392 --> 00:35:56.012
KATIE: This one is complete, it's massive.

00:35:56.012 --> 00:35:59.052
KATIE: It's the whole under the sea world.

00:35:59.052 --> 00:36:03.452
KATIE: I'm like, well, I have to go and be an aerial, so I have to plan my outfit for that.

00:36:03.452 --> 00:36:04.792
KATIE: It's just like another Toy Story.

00:36:04.832 --> 00:36:09.592
KATIE: They kind of go up again, quite big area, and I'm like, it has to be done, you know?

00:36:09.592 --> 00:36:13.312
KATIE: It's just like, so I started to look in at what the areas they have, what rides they have.

00:36:13.312 --> 00:36:15.212
KATIE: Okay, well, can I wear this?

00:36:15.212 --> 00:36:16.372
KATIE: So yeah, so there's-

00:36:16.692 --> 00:36:20.432
VIRGINIA: How far is your hotel from the front gate of the parks?

00:36:20.432 --> 00:36:26.452
KATIE: So we have, so the station we get now, so the Toy Story Hotel is like next door to us.

00:36:26.452 --> 00:36:28.712
KATIE: So I think there's four or five stations it gots off.

00:36:28.712 --> 00:36:35.712
KATIE: So I think it says when you get on at our hotel, I think it's about 10 minutes all the way around to the front of the park.

00:36:35.712 --> 00:36:39.312
KATIE: Because obviously you go to one or the other and they like next door.

00:36:39.312 --> 00:36:45.792
KATIE: But I have to tell you, I'm not much for queuing in any lines, etc.

00:36:45.792 --> 00:36:53.052
KATIE: But apparently people in Tokyo get in line for the park opens at 9, at 2 o'clock at night.

00:36:53.092 --> 00:36:55.952
KATIE: They're there from 2 o'clock in like...

00:36:55.952 --> 00:37:02.272
VIRGINIA: I haven't heard quite that early, but I have heard that they do get there very early.

00:37:02.272 --> 00:37:05.112
KATIE: Yeah, no, I have seen different videos.

00:37:05.112 --> 00:37:07.572
KATIE: Obviously everybody has got different information again.

00:37:07.572 --> 00:37:19.252
KATIE: But my friend has just been and they went like I think in February and she said by 7 o'clock, it's you can't even see where it ends.

00:37:19.252 --> 00:37:23.432
KATIE: And yeah, a lot of people get there at least four, five hours before the park opens.

00:37:23.432 --> 00:37:33.652
KATIE: And it's only because they don't want to pay for the fast pass to get on the rides, because you can get the free ones for certain rides when you get in the park.

00:37:33.652 --> 00:37:36.632
KATIE: So the first person, obviously the quicker you're in there, the better.

00:37:36.632 --> 00:37:44.772
KATIE: But people say if you don't want to sit waiting in the queue for so long, just wait for the park to open, give it 10 minutes and it's fine.

00:37:44.772 --> 00:37:56.052
KATIE: So you can get in without because I've seen those lines and I'm just like, it does look like, I used to think going to road drop to any Disney park is madness, like an hour before.

00:37:56.052 --> 00:37:58.212
KATIE: This is like three, four, five, whatever hours.

00:37:58.212 --> 00:38:03.032
KATIE: They sleep in the queue, they bring chairs, they bring blankets, they bring food.

00:38:04.092 --> 00:38:05.072
VIRGINIA: That's crazy to me.

00:38:05.072 --> 00:38:07.312
KATIE: It's completely different level.

00:38:07.312 --> 00:38:09.412
KATIE: Honestly, I could not believe it.

00:38:09.412 --> 00:38:11.772
KATIE: I was like, yeah.

00:38:11.772 --> 00:38:15.812
VIRGINIA: I know that there are fast-pass type things that you can purchase.

00:38:15.812 --> 00:38:17.492
VIRGINIA: Have you done that for your two park days?

00:38:18.012 --> 00:38:19.252
KATIE: You can't do that yet.

00:38:19.252 --> 00:38:21.352
KATIE: So we're going to have to do when we get there.

00:38:21.352 --> 00:38:23.732
KATIE: So it says you can only purchase it.

00:38:23.732 --> 00:38:24.752
KATIE: I did research.

00:38:24.812 --> 00:38:29.292
KATIE: It says you obviously you buy your actual park ticket and then when you get there on the day.

00:38:29.292 --> 00:38:34.652
KATIE: So there's a limited number of the fast passes that you can purchase, but there's also a number of fast passes.

00:38:34.652 --> 00:38:35.992
KATIE: Obviously you can get like free.

00:38:35.992 --> 00:38:46.012
KATIE: So for certain rides and like they have the fantasy springs, which is the new area they have with four rides, which is Frozen, Peter Pan, Rapunzel, and there's one more.

00:38:46.152 --> 00:38:47.712
KATIE: And that one is a new area.

00:38:47.712 --> 00:38:53.452
KATIE: So that used to be like on the online queue, you know, when you join and you get your timing.

00:38:53.452 --> 00:39:00.012
KATIE: But now you can pay for the area and you can also get obviously the free one, which once they go and obviously you pay.

00:39:00.012 --> 00:39:02.812
KATIE: So yeah, so we get it then when we get there.

00:39:02.812 --> 00:39:05.572
KATIE: And we also going to have to pay for their monorail.

00:39:05.572 --> 00:39:07.352
KATIE: Their monorail is not free.

00:39:07.352 --> 00:39:11.872
KATIE: So they charge, I think it worked out about six pounds for two days, which we're there.

00:39:11.872 --> 00:39:15.272
KATIE: And this unlimited rides, which is not expensive, but you still have to pay.

00:39:15.552 --> 00:39:21.092
KATIE: So we'd have to pay for the monorail, which you can buy overseas at one year there.

00:39:21.092 --> 00:39:23.832
KATIE: And then once the fast pass, we'll also get when we get there.

00:39:23.832 --> 00:39:24.772
KATIE: So we'll have to wait.

00:39:24.772 --> 00:39:30.192
KATIE: Yeah, I was hoping I could get it now because that would be great because then you could have it secured like we had with Universal.

00:39:30.192 --> 00:39:32.112
KATIE: It would be fantastic.

00:39:32.112 --> 00:39:34.892
KATIE: But unfortunately, yeah, you have to be there to do that.

00:39:34.952 --> 00:39:42.752
KATIE: So okay, we're waiting to get there and get it quickly booked and we know we can get on all the rides and go to Fantasy Springs and yeah.

00:39:42.752 --> 00:39:43.572
VIRGINIA: Yeah.

00:39:43.992 --> 00:39:46.872
VIRGINIA: Which park are you doing on Friday?

00:39:46.872 --> 00:39:59.772
KATIE: On Friday, we are doing, I'm just trying to think, I think we did the main park on Friday because I've got all the tickets saved and it's just, you know, trying to remember where we're going half the time.

00:39:59.772 --> 00:40:02.392
KATIE: So on a Friday and the Friday is the 25th, right?

00:40:03.772 --> 00:40:07.972
KATIE: Friday the 25th is the main Tokyo Disneyland Park.

00:40:07.972 --> 00:40:08.532
VIRGINIA: Got it.

00:40:08.532 --> 00:40:08.792
VIRGINIA: Okay.

00:40:08.792 --> 00:40:13.472
KATIE: So we got that for the day and then Saturday, we're doing the Tokyo Disney Sea.

00:40:13.472 --> 00:40:13.732
VIRGINIA: Okay.

00:40:13.732 --> 00:40:21.592
KATIE: We wanted to see, we wanted to get, we originally thought, oh, let's get both parks for both days so then you can switch, right?

00:40:21.592 --> 00:40:27.192
KATIE: Like you would do like if you get the park hopper in most other parks.

00:40:27.192 --> 00:40:35.572
KATIE: But we were thinking if we do the park hopper like that, we may miss out because there's a lot of shows, there's parades and both parks have got like a fireworks display.

00:40:35.612 --> 00:40:40.072
KATIE: So I was like if we have to rush from one to another, we may miss some things.

00:40:40.072 --> 00:40:48.132
KATIE: So I thought I'd rather just focus on one park because if there is a little bit like a line or queue for any rides, you don't mind because you know, do you know what?

00:40:48.132 --> 00:40:49.772
KATIE: I'm here all day, it's fine.

00:40:49.772 --> 00:40:56.532
KATIE: And then we thought we would do one park so we're doing the main park on a Friday and then yet the Tokyo Disney Sea on a Saturday.

00:40:56.532 --> 00:41:02.452
VIRGINIA: Yeah, I always say that park hopping is more for like your second trip or any subsequent trip.

00:41:02.452 --> 00:41:09.952
VIRGINIA: Like first trip, stick to one park per day because there's so much to see, you're going to have plenty to do.

00:41:09.952 --> 00:41:11.792
VIRGINIA: So you don't even have to worry about that.

00:41:11.792 --> 00:41:12.752
KATIE: Yeah, that's what we thought.

00:41:13.092 --> 00:41:14.492
KATIE: We thought that's probably a good idea.

00:41:14.492 --> 00:41:17.452
KATIE: Like you said, for the first visit, just do one park.

00:41:17.452 --> 00:41:21.052
KATIE: And we also we have also another option for Tokyo Disney Park.

00:41:21.052 --> 00:41:33.252
KATIE: So once we're there and we know like if we're going back to Osaka, you know, once we've decided what's the plan, they also do during the week, so like Monday to Friday, you can buy the evening ticket.

00:41:33.252 --> 00:41:35.292
KATIE: So it's a half price to the notes.

00:41:35.292 --> 00:41:37.912
KATIE: It's like $20 for half day.

00:41:37.912 --> 00:41:42.772
KATIE: And you can go, I think, from four or five o'clock in the evening into the park for like a half day.

00:41:42.772 --> 00:41:48.412
KATIE: So I was like, if we have got some time, if we want to go, maybe, yeah, like we can just do one evening, right?

00:41:48.412 --> 00:41:57.872
KATIE: Get on the metro, get half day because the half day's tickets don't sell out as quick as the full days, because I think the full day we paid 40, just over 40 pound each.

00:41:57.872 --> 00:41:59.592
KATIE: So it wasn't too bad.

00:41:59.592 --> 00:42:01.632
KATIE: And then, yeah, that is such a good deal.

00:42:01.632 --> 00:42:02.532
KATIE: I know.

00:42:02.532 --> 00:42:10.352
KATIE: I'm telling you, when I was paying, I mean, even Disneyland Paris, when we looked at like a day pass, I think even that was about 80 pound give or take.

00:42:10.352 --> 00:42:19.952
KATIE: So comparing it even to Paris, like when the price like, oh my God, like you could literally buy both both parks for one day for the price of one park somewhere else.

00:42:19.952 --> 00:42:21.812
KATIE: And you're like, yeah, so it's quite good.

00:42:21.812 --> 00:42:32.532
KATIE: But yeah, we thought if we have got some time one evening, and we think we would like to do, we could just buy a half day park ticket, but it's only during the week, because the weekends obviously get busy.

00:42:32.532 --> 00:42:33.332
KATIE: They don't allow that.

00:42:33.332 --> 00:42:38.432
KATIE: But during the week, I thought, you know what, we have got a couple of days that we might have some time, and we might just do that.

00:42:38.432 --> 00:42:42.752
KATIE: So that might be an option as well, just to add a bit more if we want to do that.

00:42:42.952 --> 00:42:46.972
KATIE: So that would be quite good if we can do that.

00:42:47.092 --> 00:42:49.612
VIRGINIA: It will be very interesting to see what you actually get into.

00:42:49.612 --> 00:42:59.212
VIRGINIA: But is there any one particular attraction or something that you're most excited for on your Disney days?

00:42:59.212 --> 00:43:02.912
KATIE: I think I am very excited to ride the Beauty and the Beast ride.

00:43:02.912 --> 00:43:10.472
KATIE: Because again, Beauty and the Beast and Little Mermaid were the two of my favorite Disney films since I've been growing up.

00:43:10.472 --> 00:43:14.432
KATIE: And I think from what I've heard, I have not watched any videos.

00:43:14.432 --> 00:43:17.392
KATIE: I tried not to like spoil it for myself.

00:43:17.392 --> 00:43:20.312
KATIE: So I want to save it for when I actually got to do it.

00:43:20.312 --> 00:43:25.352
KATIE: Because people say it's just a different, like it's completely different levels.

00:43:25.352 --> 00:43:28.912
KATIE: So that's the ride I'm actually really, really excited to ride.

00:43:28.912 --> 00:43:30.992
KATIE: So yes, I can't wait for that one.

00:43:30.992 --> 00:43:32.252
KATIE: Really can't.

00:43:32.252 --> 00:43:32.952
VIRGINIA: All right.

00:43:32.952 --> 00:43:39.992
VIRGINIA: Well, on your departure day, the 27th of April, what time is your flight back to the UK?

00:43:39.992 --> 00:43:42.032
KATIE: We're flying back about 1 o'clock as well.

00:43:42.252 --> 00:43:45.832
KATIE: So we're leaving here about 1 o'clock, and then we're coming back about 1 o'clock.

00:43:45.832 --> 00:43:46.632
KATIE: Yeah.

00:43:46.632 --> 00:43:47.432
VIRGINIA: Okay.

00:43:47.432 --> 00:43:54.392
KATIE: And then we're landing back in the UK on a Sunday as well, because in time difference, we're coming back in time.

00:43:54.392 --> 00:44:00.072
KATIE: So we're coming back on a Sunday evening to UK, which is quite good as well because we have a bit of time in the evening.

00:44:00.072 --> 00:44:00.332
VIRGINIA: Yeah.

00:44:00.332 --> 00:44:01.592
VIRGINIA: You're traveling back in time.

00:44:01.592 --> 00:44:02.572
VIRGINIA: You're going back to the future.

00:44:02.572 --> 00:44:03.852
VIRGINIA: Yeah.

00:44:03.852 --> 00:44:06.412
VIRGINIA: Just like the poster behind you.

00:44:06.452 --> 00:44:08.192
KATIE: There you go.

00:44:08.192 --> 00:44:08.732
VIRGINIA: All right.

00:44:08.732 --> 00:44:11.572
VIRGINIA: Well, I cannot wait to hear all of the details.

00:44:11.572 --> 00:44:17.252
VIRGINIA: I'm going to send you a couple of links because I've had a couple of people on the show before.

00:44:17.252 --> 00:44:27.792
VIRGINIA: My friend, Kristina, my friend, Jeanette have both done episodes about Tokyo and if you want to get excited about your trip, I'll send you links to their episodes if you want to listen to those.

00:44:27.792 --> 00:44:28.132
VIRGINIA: Yes.

00:44:28.132 --> 00:44:28.412

KATIE: Yeah, definitely.

00:44:30.472 --> 00:44:30.912
KATIE: That's what I mean.

00:44:31.032 --> 00:44:43.772
KATIE: I think closer coming to the trip, trying to listen, to learn a bit more because the more information you have because it's such a fast, it's so much going on, it's such a fascinating place and it's different to anywhere we've been to.

00:44:43.772 --> 00:44:46.912
KATIE: We've done obviously trips to Europe, we've done trips to America.

00:44:46.912 --> 00:45:01.872
KATIE: It's just something different and I want to make sure, I know you can't obviously know everything, prepare yourself, but I just want to know as much as I can to make the most of it, just to have that experience the best as you can.

00:45:01.872 --> 00:45:05.392
KATIE: So yeah, any help, you can just send it my way.

00:45:05.392 --> 00:45:07.532
KATIE: Absolutely, I would appreciate that.

00:45:07.532 --> 00:45:08.492
VIRGINIA: I will.

VIRGINIA: Well, Katie, it has been so fun talking about your plans and it's going to be even more fun to talk about what actually ended up happening.
